Allotments notes

Published: 11 July 2017

Several years ago I moved to Wolston village, and looking back it was one of the best things I have ever done. The next best thing was to take on an allotment, where I have met people who I would be proud to call family and that's what we are - one big family.

Not so happy though with events that happened on Sunday July 2nd, when the allotment trading shed was broken into and £3000 worth of items stolen. Several other sheds on the Allotments were also broken into, but such is the spirit of the association that we will get over it.

The one thing that we can’t get over is that if the site were to be earmarked for houses then we really would have problems. Such an event has already occurred at Wellesbourne, where Coventry diocese who own the land have proposed just that and, once the wheels start rolling, nothing will stop it. We have several vacant plots, which is one of the first things that councils ask when considering whether an allotments site could be developed, and we would like to be in a much stronger position to resist development where we can say we have a waiting list - so come on Wolston, help us out ! NB: You don’t need to take on a whole plot, smaller sizes are available.

We would also like to promote our first social event of the year, a Family Barbecue, which will take place on Friday 18th of August. The children's event will start at 4pm, followed by the barbecue at 6pm. A range of BBQ items will be on offer, including a veggie option, and soft drinks are included – other drinks BYO please. If you would like a relaxed afternoon out, meet new friends and also help the allotments, please contact 07826 164389 to purchase tickets, or visit our Trading Shed between 10am and midday on any Saturday or Sunday. Tickets £5 for adults and £2.50 for children. For more information on the BBQ, look here
