Warwickshire Police need your help with information about suspicious activity

21-11-2017 01:37 PM GMT
Warwickshire Police currently have two countywide operations in progress. These operations are focussing on reducing the number of incidents of vehicle crime and house burglaries across Warwickshire. In order to get the very best out of these operations, they need the help and support of local communities with information and intelligence. If you think something in your area is suspicious, it probably is. You will know your area and its usual activity and comings/goings. If you think something is odd, out of place and suspicious, they need to hear from you. Before every incident, there is usually some suspicious activity and the Police need calls to make them aware of this. Please could we encourage you to call 101 if you notice suspicious persons, vehicles or activity around your own or neighbouring homes. If you believe that a crime is in progress, please dial 999. Finally, to ensure that this message reaches as many people as possible, please could we ask you to share as widely as you can.

21/11/2017 Farmers warned to beware of rogue tarmac gangs 21-11-2017 09:43 AM GMT
Farmers are warned to beware of rogue tarmac gangs targeting their premises. They imply that they would rather tip the tarmac on the farm driveway to cover a few potholes as a favour, rather than have to dispose of it. If the farmer agrees, the rogue gang arrive quickly, spread the tarmac and then demand thousands of pounds with menaces!

Trading Standards Officers were carrying out an enforcement exercise to remove illegal and misleading advertising on the public highway. Approximately 11 advertising pallets were taken. You can find out more about this enforcement project here.

We do however know that fraudsters will sometimes pretend to be Trading Standards Officers in order to carry out their crimes, even going to the trouble of wearing clothing with Trading Standards logos and using fake ID. We therefore welcome any reports concerning the activities of Warwickshire Trading Standards across the county and are only too happy to confirm or otherwise the legitimacy of these activities. Warwickshire Trading Standards is warning residents to beware of door knockers selling household goods door to door in the Warwick District. The door knockers may be claiming to be ex-offenders or say they are on charity run rehabilitation schemes in order to get a sale. The goods themselves are often vastly overpriced and poorly made. They usually carry 'official' looking badges to make them appear more authentic. Police across the UK have linked these callers to cases of burglary. Warwickshire Trading Standards advises residents not to open the door to unexpected doorstep traders or to buy goods or services from them.

In reality, this is simply 'throwing good money after bad !'

Smishing Used To Defraud Victims 30-05-2017 08:27 AM BST

Smishing – the term used for SMS phishing – is an activity which enables criminals to steal victims’ money or identity, or both, as a result of a response to a text message. Smishing uses your mobile phone (either a smartphone or traditional non-internet connected handset) to manipulate innocent people into taking various actions which can lead to being defrauded. The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau has received information that fraudsters are targeting victims via text message, purporting to be from their credit card provider, stating a transaction has been approved on their credit card. The text message further states to confirm if the transaction is genuine by replying ‘Y’ for Yes or ‘N’ for No. Through this method the fraudster would receive confirmation of the victim’s active telephone number and would be able to engage further by asking for the victim’s credit card details, CVV number (the three digits on the back of your bank card) and/or other personal information. Protect yourself: Always check the validity of the text message by contacting your credit card provider through ... Continue reading

More Scams Arise Following #NHS #CyberAttack 24-05-2017 08:11 AM BST

Action Fraud has received the first reports of Tech-Support scammers claiming to be from Microsoft who are taking advantage of the global WannaCry ransomware attack. One victim fell for the scam after calling a ‘help’ number advertised on a pop up window. The window which wouldn’t close said the victim had been affected by WannaCry Ransomware. The victim granted the fraudsters remote access to their PC after being convinced there wasn’t sufficient anti-virus protection. The fraudsters then installed Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, which is actually free, and took £320 as payment. It is important to remember that Microsoft’s error and warning messages on your PC will never include a phone number. Additionally Microsoft will never proactively reach out to you to provide unsolicited PC or technical support. Any communication they have with you must be initiated by you. How to protect yourself: Don’t call numbers from pop-up messages. Never allow remote access to your computer. Always be wary of unsolicited calls. If you’re unsure of a caller’s identity, hang up. Never divulge passwords or pin numbers. Microsoft or someone on their behalf will never call you. If you believe you have already been a victim Get your computer checked [...]https://pixel.wp.com/b.gif?host=safeinwarwickshire.com&blog=23914074&post=13240&subd=safeinwarwickshire&ref=&feed=1

The automated 'HMRC' message told the resident that they should phone a number before legal action was taken against them. The resident phoned the number and spoke to some who claimed that a warrant had been issued for their arrest for non-payment of taxes! These bogus phone calls are known to HMRC which has issued some additional advice
