The Neighbourhood Watch scheme in the UK is a partnership where people come together to make their communities safer. It involves the Police, Community Safety departments of local authorities, other voluntary organisations and, above all, individuals and families who want to make their neighbourhoods better places to live. It aims to help people protect themselves and their properties and to reduce the fear of crime by means of improved home security, greater vigilance, accurate reporting of suspicious incidents to the police and by fostering a community spirit.

There are basic things that individuals can do to avoid becoming the victims of crime or which will make it difficult for those who try to commit crime.

  1. Always lock doors and windows to your home, garage and shed.
  2. Remove the key from your door and do not leave it near the door on view (remember keys have been stolen without someone having to enter a property by using fishing rods through letterboxes or cat flaps).
  3. Fit a door chain and always use it.
  4. Never leave valuables e.g. handbags, wallets, keys, on view. Take them to bed with you!
  5. Always lock your car when it is unattended.  If your car is on the drive or in the road, do not leave anything valuable in sight.
  6. Always check the ID of callers before you allow them into your home – make sure you know who is coming into your home
  7. Mark your valuable property with SMARTWATER or with your postcode and house number using a UV pen.
  8. Cancel papers and milk when you are away and let your friend/neighbour know and when you will return.
  9. Get to know your Neighbourhood Watch contact.  Her name is KAREN SIMMONS and she will have helpful information for you.
  10. Make a note of your Neighbourhood Watch contact: Her number is 077 9972 3032

If you wish to report anything, call the Rugby Police Station on 01788 541111 or contact Karen.

If it’s an emergency dial: 999
Remember - Don’t wait for someone else to report it. It is better to have lots of reports than none.
