Two years ago in 2008 the allotments (at the junction of Warwick Road and Stretton Lane) were sadly overgrown, mainly on the unlet plots, and this dissuaded new people from coming forward to rent a plot. This problem was recognised and a major project was undertaken to clear all the plots – irrespective of whether they were rented. This work being completed late 2009 and this enabled the Allotment Society to offer pre-prepared plots to people who may be interested to rent. And they were ! The result of this is that there are now more than 120 families with allotments, of which over 90% are from Wolston.
The result of all this hard work has been development of a tremendous community spirit leading to social events, BBQs visits to the Autumn and Spring Malvern Shows, and to Highgrove House. Fruit and vegetables are provided for the Harvest Festivals at the churches, and disabled access has been provided. These communal activities have lead to a tremendous sense of cohesion, belonging and community.
Wolston and Brandon Allotment and Gardens Association Annual open flower, vegetable and produce show, Saturday September 4th 2010. The Classes included: vegetables, flowers, cakes, jams, chutneys and more. In the Children's section there was the chance to enter a miniature garden, vegetable person/animal, or a posy.
The show opened to the public at 14:30 although the Village Hall had been a hive of activity from early Saturday morning as exhibits were displayed and judged. At 15:00 Co-op Manager, Peter Keyte, presented the cups and shields to the winners. This was followed by the much anticipated auction of produce which attracted some unusual and spirited bidding from all age ranges. Jenny Leigh, the auctioneer, was ably assisted by Keith Blay and Pat Smiton who relieved patrons of their cash in exchange for the wonderful produce.
